Why a ship’s kitty avoids arguments
On a trip one person pays for the diesel, another for the big grocery run, someone else for the harbour fee. Without a system, by the end no one remembers who laid out what — and a lovely trip turns into a tedious reckoning. A ship’s kitty records the expenses and settles up fairly at the end.
Two models
- Shared kitty: everyone pays in an amount at the start, expenses come out of the kitty. At the end the remainder is split. Simple, but you have to front the money.

Both work — what matters is that every expense is recorded with amount, payer and (optionally) participants.
Working out shares correctly
Not every expense splits the same way:
- Evenly: diesel, harbour, shared meals → across everyone.
- Subgroup: only three used the marina sauna → just those three.
- Individually: the beer for one person → not split at all.

Record cleanly — right away, not later

- Not noting participants, even though not everyone was involved.
- Mixing cash and card without recording who actually paid.
- Rounding at the end that does not add up — better to record it exactly.
